Checkout system bugs the latest problem to plague Target

WASHINGTON — Target has run into more problems after last year’s security data breach exposed tens-of-thousands of its customers’ personal information.

Now the store is facing another challenge — but this time the problem was not a massive data breach. A computer glitch basically crashed Target’s checkout system causing major backups in checkout lines at stores nationwide for a few hours, according to USA TODAY.

Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder says this is not in any way related to a security issue.

“[Sunday night], Target experienced a glitch that impacted the speed of checkout at some of our U.S. stores. Since that time, we’ve been able to restore our check- out process. Once again, we sincerely apologize to anyone inconvenienced by this issue,” Snyder said in an email.

A Monday morning a check of the Target at Potomac Yard in Alexandria showed that things were running smoothly. There were no problems with customers checking out. Carrie Carter, who shops at the Potomac Yard store, is not bothered by the newest Target mishap. She is a loyal Target customer.

“It doesn’t bother me at all,” she says, adding that she’s still going to shop there.

Sarah Oubari from Fort Belvoir says she’ll continue shopping at Target as well even considering the recent problem.

“I was more irritated around Christmas when there were security concerns,” Oubari says.

But Antonio Alves from Alexandria says just hearing about the checkout line problems will make people not want to go back to Target. He says he’s done with the store.

“The security breach happened and I had to get my credit cards changed and everything like that. So it makes me not want to go back there,” says Alves.
