With green cars, fuel efficiency is where it’s at

WASHINGTON – Energy efficiency is the name of the game when it comes to cleaner cars.

At least, that’s according to Tammy Darvish, vice president for Darcars Automotive Group.

“The great thing is with the technology today you can get great fuel economy in many, many vehicles whether they are a hybrid or not,” she says.

Darvish points out, for example, that the Toyota Corolla gets up to 41 miles per gallon.

She says car makers are on board with producing greener vehicles, both hybrid and non-hybrid.

“But what’s happening is that consumers are not moving as quick as the administration would like to see them move, I’m sure,” says Darvish.

President Barack Obama is pushing for cleaner cars that get greater mileage, but the bottom line is that consumers will buy what they want, Darvish says – and the fact is that hybrids are on the pricey side.

“It’s the technology of the vehicles that are far greater interest to consumers than hybrid technology,” she says, referring to types of technology like parking assistance and navigation systems.

Darvish adds that as fuel prices rise, so will demand for hybrids. But right now, with fuel prices that are more stable, dealerships have a larger inventory of hybrids on hand than they are used to.
