The most common (and hackable) passwords

WASHINGTON – Despite repeated reports of online passwords leaking online, people are still choosing incredibly easy to hack passwords, a new report finds.

ZDNet.com reports many Internet users still do not take password security seriously, thinking it will never happen to them.

Mark Burnett, who describes himself as an IT security consultant and author on his blog Xato.net, generated a list of the top 500 worst (most common) passwords.

Below are the top 10 most common passwords. (Ed. Note: Some words on the list may be offensive to some.)

  1. password
  2. 123456
  3. 12345678
  4. 1234
  5. qwerty
  6. 12345
  7. dragon
  8. pussy
  9. baseball
  10. football

The Geek Stuff compiled “The Ultimate Guide for Creating Strong Passwords” a few years ago. Their tips include using passwords that are at least eight characters and using different characters (number, letters, uppercase, lowercase).
