Cameras sought to catch Dulles Access Road cheats

Thursday - 1/28/2010, 3:56am  ET

WASHINGTON - Drivers who have found ways to avoid the tolls on the Dulles Toll Road by doubling back on the Dulles Access Road could soon find their actions caught on tape.

Some drivers avoid the Dulles Toll Road by either using the gas station on the Dulles Access Road - or by driving all the way out to Dulles International Airport - and then doubling back.

Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority spokeswoman Courtney Mickalonis says that is just one of the problems the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is seeing with regards to the free access road.

"People who use the Dulles Access highway are allowed to access the HOV lanes even though they don't meet the HOV restriction," Mickalonis says.

The airports authority has asked the Virginia General Assembly to allow the installation of cameras and vehicle scanners to catch the cheaters. The measure heads to a Virginia Senate committee Thursday.

Mickalonis says the airports authority police issued nearly 1,200 tickets for backtracking in 2009.
