Suspect killed in police-involved shooting in D.C.

Monday - 6/8/2009, 7:22pm  ET

WASHINGTON - A man wanted by authorities was killed in a police-involved shooting near the Navy Yard Monday.

D.C. Police say shortly after 11 a.m., officers patrolling the area of the 500 block of M Street Southeast recognized the man because he had an outstanding arrest warrant related to a fatal stabbing.

The man, identified as 38-year-old Allan Haggins, fled after he noticed the officers. Authorities say he later pulled out a handgun.

Two police officers shot Haggins. Officials say he also apparently shot himself.

Haggins was taken to a hospital where he later died.

The officers were not injured in the incident. Authorities are investigating.
