Post offices open late on tax day

Wednesday - 4/15/2009, 4:25am  ET

WASHINGTON - If you haven't done your taxes yet, you're probably going to be rushing to the post office Wednesday to get them mailed. But what happens if you hit traffic and miss closing time? Some post offices in the region will be open late to accept tax returns.

In Maryland

In D.C.

In Virginia

  • No Northern Virginia offices are extending their retail hours.

Some stations regularly close at 8 p.m. so click here to search by Zip Code for post office stations and hours near you. Remember your taxes need enough postage on them: 42 cents for 1 ounce and 17 cents for each additional ounce. Tax agencies will not pay for the extra postage and your return will be mailed back to you. Also, if you put your return in the curbside mailbox make sure it's there before the last pickup time so it will be postmarked on time.

If you miss the post office and it's before midnight, you can file your taxes online or file for an extension. An extension will give you until Oct. 15 to file your taxes.
