Stocks edge higher…Hewlett-Packard splits in 2…NHTSA investigates Ford power steering problems

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are slightly higher in early trading on Wall Street as investors assess corporate news. Hewlett-Packard rose after announcing that it would split itself into two companies. Medical equipment maker Carefusion surged after rival Becton Dickinson said it would acquire the company.

NEW YORK (AP) — Hewlett-Packard Co. is splitting itself into two companies, one focused on its personal computer and printing business and another on technology services, such as data storage, servers and software. The company has laid off tens of thousands of employees in recent years due to flagging sales as customers turn to mobile devices to perform basic computing chores. The shift has curbed demand for HP’s desktop and laptop computers, as well as its printers.

DETROIT (AP) — U.S. safety regulators are investigating complaints of power-assisted steering failure in three Ford Motor Co. midsize car models. The probe covers 938,000 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ cars from the 2010 through 2012 model years, as well as the 2011 Mercury Milan. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it found 508 complaints alleging that the cars lost power-assisted steering, causing increased steering effort. Four complaints say the problem caused crashes.

DETROIT (AP) — Chrysler is recalling more than 31,000 full-size commercial vans to fix a problem with the headrests. The recall covers 2014 Ram ProMaster vans. The company says the headrests can exceed the maximum allowable gap between a person’s head and the head restraint. The company says it doesn’t know of any crashes or injuries from the problem. Dealers will replace the headrest for free.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — The Trump name will be coming off the shuttered Trump Plaza casino in Atlantic City. Ivanka Trump tells The Associated Press that Trump Entertainment Resorts will begin removing letters spelling out the Trump name on the casino’s exterior today. Donald and Ivanka Trump are still pressing a lawsuit against Trump Entertainment — which they no longer control or are involved with — to have their name stripped from the Trump Taj Mahal casino and the company itself.
