Stocks dip a bit … Consumer spending pops … Macy’s to boost seasonal hiring more than 3 percent

NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. stock market slid to start the week, following European markets lower. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 178 points at the start of trading today, but has been slowly climbing back. The market has turned choppy in recent weeks, flipping between solid gains and steep losses.

DETROIT (AP) — Toyota says it is recalling 690,000 Tacoma pickup trucks because the rear leaf springs could break, puncture the gas tank and cause a fire. The recall covers Tacoma Four-by-Four and Pre-Runner pickups from the 2005 through 2011 model years. Owners will be notified by mail and Toyota says dealers will fix the problem at no cost.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Some welcome evidence the economy is on solid footing heading into the year’s final quarter coming today from the Commerce Department. Americans boosted spending 0.5 percent in August over the previous month. Helped by higher wages and salaries, income rose a modest 0.3 percent in August, slightly faster than a 0.2 percent July increase.

NEW YORK (AP) — Macy’s plans to hire about 86,000 seasonal holiday workers nationwide to bolster its stores, call centers and distribution hubs. That’s a 3.6 percent increase from last year. The department store chain, which also operates Bloomingdale’s, says today that the growth is being fueled by its expanding online business.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Security practices and the protocol for dealing with unexpected incidents at the nation’s air traffic control facilities are under review, after last week’s fire at a suburban Chicago center brought flights at the city’s two airports to a halt and disrupted air traffic across the country. The Federal Aviation Administration chief announced the review today.
