Furniture manufacturer to open facility in Va.

SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) — A California office furniture manufacturer plans to open up a new facility in Virginia.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s office says Friant and Associates chose the Suffolk location over one on Maryland.

The governor’s office says the Oakland, California-based company will invest more than $17 million to establish its first Virginia operation and create 166 new jobs.

The company was founded in 1990 and designs and manufacturers customizable high-end office systems.

McAuliffe approved a $200,000 grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist Suffolk with the project. The company will also receive benefits from the Port of Virginia Economic and Infrastructure Development Zone Grant Program. Funding and services to support the company’s employee training activities will be provided through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program.
