DETROIT (AP) — Automakers report a big rebound in U.S. sales last month.
General Motors’ figures rank as perhaps the most surprising of the bunch. Analysts had expected its sales might be hurt by the company’s recall crisis, but GM saw a 13 percent increase over sales in May of last year. That makes it GM’s best sales month since August 2008.
Nissan had the biggest gain reported so far, with U.S. sales up 19 percent.
Toyota and Chrysler both saw their sales jump 17 percent.
Ford’s sales rose just 3 percent, as a cutback on incentives dragged truck sales down. But Ford says it was a record month for the Fusion sedan and Escape SUV.
Of major automakers, only Volkswagen’s sales fell. They were down 15 percent as Volkswagen prepared to launch the new Golf compact car.
