Va. reimburses erroneous tax refund card fees

Thursday - 4/18/2013, 9:40am  ET

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Some Virginia taxpayers mistakenly charged fees for using the state's new tax refund card are getting reimbursements from the state.

This is the first year that taxpayers could use the Way2Go card to get their refunds. The refunds are loaded onto the card, which works like a debit card.

Use of the card is supposed to be free. But some taxpayers reported being hit with unexpected fees.

Virginia Department of Taxation spokesman Joel Davison tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/11BrcFx ) that most issues have been resolved. He says fewer than 10 reimbursement checks have been mailed to taxpayers so far.

More than 1 million Virginians opted for direct deposit of their refunds. Nearly 350,000 taxpayers chose the Way2Go card.
