Tips for shopping online safely

WASHINGTON – With the holidays just around the corner, you may be thinking about doing your shopping online.

It can be faster and easier, but you still need to be careful.

Here are some tips for shopping from Kiplinger Personal Finance.

  • Never buy over public Wi-Fi: Hackers can tap into public hot spots and steal your personal information.
  • Use a credit card: Credit cards offer protections that debit cards don’t.
  • Use a smartphone or tablet: You can get good deals on the go, but you still need to be careful — you could be putting your personal information at risk. Be especially wary of apps that want to access your personal contacts.
  • Don’t fall for too good to be true: If a site is offering a deal that’s too good to be true, it probably is. Also be wary of sites that demand a direct transfer of funds or won’t accept credit cards.
