Con-way reported earnings on May 1. Here are the numbers you need to know.

For the quarter ended March 31 (Q1), Con-way missed estimates on revenues and missed estimates on earnings per share.

Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue shrank slightly. Non-GAAP earnings per share dropped significantly. GAAP earnings per share dropped significantly.

EPS came in at $0.19. The 22 earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ predicted $0.27 per share. Non-GAAP EPS of $0.19 for Q1 were 58% lower than the prior-year quarter's $0.45 per share. GAAP EPS of $0.25 for Q1 were 46% lower than the prior-year quarter's $0.46 per share.

Margin details
For the quarter, gross margin was 2.4%, much worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 2.4%, 170 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 1.0%, 90 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. (Margins calculated in GAAP terms.)

Looking ahead
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $1.49 billion. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $0.66.

Next year's average estimate for revenue is $5.81 billion. The average EPS estimate is $2.11.
