Education Management Beats on Both Top and Bottom Lines

Education Management reported earnings on May 1. Here are the numbers you need to know.

For the quarter ended March 31 (Q3), Education Management beat slightly on revenues and beat expectations on earnings per share.

Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue shrank. Non-GAAP earnings per share shrank significantly. GAAP loss per share dropped.

EPS details
EPS came in at $0.24. The nine earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ predicted $0.20 per share. Non-GAAP EPS of $0.24 for Q3 were 27% lower than the prior-year quarter's $0.33 per share. GAAP EPS were -$2.28 for Q3 versus -$3.31 per share for the prior-year quarter.

Margin details
For the quarter, gross margin was 45.2%, 80 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 12.8%, 60 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was -44.5%, much better than the prior-year quarter. (Margins calculated in GAAP terms.)

Looking ahead
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $578.3 million. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $0.00.
