NextEra Energy Beats on EPS But GAAP Results Lag

NextEra Energy reported earnings on Jan. 29. Here are the numbers you need to know.

For the quarter ended Dec. 31 (Q4), NextEra Energy whiffed on revenues and beat expectations on earnings per share.

Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue contracted and GAAP earnings per share dropped significantly.

EPS came in at $1.03. The 14 earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ anticipated $0.96 per share. GAAP EPS of $1.01 for Q4 were 36% lower than the prior-year quarter's $1.59 per share.

Margin details
For the quarter, gross margin was 41.2%, 260 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 21.7%, 760 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 12.7%, 460 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter.

Looking ahead
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $3.91 billion. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $1.04.

Next year's average estimate for revenue is $16.35 billion. The average EPS estimate is $4.94.
