Yuengling Ice Cream, born out of a beer maker’s need to stay in business during prohibition, is back in business.
The first 100,000 quarts of the new Yuengling Ice Cream, in 10 flavors, began coming off the production line Thursday, two months ahead of schedule because of strong demand.
Yuengling, America’s oldest beer brewer, began producing ice cream in 1920. The original Yuengling Ice Cream dairy closed in 1985.
The new ice cream company is not affiliated directly with the brewer, but has been launched by Yuengling family member David Yuengling.
The ice cream is being produced at Leiby’s Dairy in Tamaqua, Pa.
None of the 10 flavors is “beer.” However, the ice cream company does have a play on the beer maker’s “Black & Tan,” with a mix of caramel and chocolate ice cream.
For now, it may be hard for fans in the D.C. area to find it.
Yuengling Ice Cream will be carried by Acme, Weis and other independent grocery stores in Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. The closest to D.C. looks to be a Weis in Laurel, Md.
The company says it fully anticipates being in more grocery stores later this year.
