5 offbeat spots that aren’t completely sold out for New Year’s Eve

It’s go time. No matter how many times people asked you the question, “What are you doing for New Year’s Eve,” you procrastinated. While many of the city’s annual events will be sold out by now, there are plenty of places to ring in 2014. Here are five picks:

Jack Rose Dining Saloon: Adams Morgan’s haven for Scotch lovers has two options for revelers, and there are tickets left for both of them. If you’re not a night owl and plan to be home in your jammies by the time the ball drops, there’s the Punch, Pints and Pigs Pre-Game, a rooftop pig roast from 6-9 p.m. $45 gets you all-you-can-eat pork and all-you-can-drink-punch and pints of beer. For a more traditional party, there’s the $125 per person New Year’s Eve party with open bar, live DJ, photo booth and cigar specials.

Urban Butcher: The newest addition to downtown Silver Spring is hosting a no-cover-charge party all night that includes drink specials and a complimentary Champagne toast at midnight. Nosh on chef Raynold Mendizabal’s cured sausages, empanadas and chicken croquettes while you ring in the new year.

Co. Co. Sala: Need a place to grab a bite before heading to a New Year’s Eve party? Co. Co. Sala is booked for both its seatings, except for the bar, where they’ll serve dinner from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on a first come, first served basis. The $75 four-course menu includes a choice of North Atlantic cod, beef tenderloin or porcini mushroom agnolotti for entree and a “Hades” dessert of dark chocolate steamed pudding with a host of accompaniments.

Mockingbird Hill: Want a Spanish-themed New Year’s Eve that’s cheaper than Taberna del Alabardero? Derek Brown’s sherry bar, Mockingbird Hill, is hosting a no-cover party with a flamenco guitarist and dancer, specials on Spain’s Mahou beer as well as sherry and a grape-eating contest at midnight — in lieu of the Spanish tradition of eating grapes for good luck.

Pizzeria Orso: Looking for family-friendly in Virginia? Pizzeria Orso in Falls Church has an early-to-bed party planned. Pizzas are buy one, get one free for adults, while kids under 10 eat free. The restaurant will close at 8 p.m., but there will be an early countdown surprise for everyone shortly after closing time. Reservations are still available: call 703.266.3460. Afterwards, you could always head over to the Alexandria waterfront to catch the fireworks at the city’s First Night celebration — no ticket required.
