WASHINGTON - Viewers will be able to stream some of Discovery Communications Inc.’s most popular programs through Amazon.com Inc.’s video streaming service, under a licensing agreement announced Wednesday.
Silver Spring-based Discovery will sell prior season’s shows and specials from Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, Science and Military Channel, as well as content from its more than two decades-worth of programming archives.
Financial terms of the agreement weren’t disclosed.
Amazon will make the programming available to its Amazon Prime members. Shows will include Discovery’s Dirty Jobs, TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress and Animal Planet’s Whale Wars.
Amazon’s subscription video service has about 17,000 programs and movies currently available for streaming.
“We are pleased to work with Amazon (NASXAQ: AMZN) to help satisfy our existing viewers’ curiosity and introduce new audiences to our engaging content,” said Discovery senior vice president of digital distribution Rebecca Glashow.
Last fall, Discovery (NASDAQ: DISCA) struck a similar licensing deal with Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) under a two-year agreement.
Amazon and Discovery did not disclose the length of their licensing agreement.
