Georgetown Cupcake opening shop in Boston

Monday - 12/19/2011, 3:51pm  ET

Georgetown Cupcake, the D.C. bake shop that has lines for its $2.75 coconut, chocolate banana, toffee crunch and mocha treats, is heading to Boston.

Founders Katherine Kallinis and Sophie LaMontagne have signed a 3,800-square-foot lease at 83 Newbury St. and are expected to open next spring. The sisters, who have stores in D.C. and Bethesda, are also planning to open soon in New York City’s SoHo district. These lifelong bakers, inspired by their grandmothers, launched their first shop more than three years ago and call themselves D.C.’s "first and only cupcakery."

For the past two seasons, the pair has been featured on TLC’s "DC Cupcakes," the series which follows the sisters and business partners and their colorful crew. Armed with their grandmother’s recipes, Sophie and Katherine have expanded the reach of their sweets including baking 10,000 cupcakes that were shipped to U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

But is there room in the Hub for more cupcakes? Earlier this year, Sweet cupcakes opened its doors on School Street in Downtown Crossing offering a world of confectionery treats, while Cakeology opened a store a few steps away at 45 Province, the luxury condo tower.

Michele Messino of the Newbury Street League, a group that represents the street's merchants, said there's room in the city for more cupcakes. "How many salons are on Newbury and how many yogurt shops?" she said. "The market will bear what it can bear. The good ones last and the not so good ones don't."
