AP PHOTOS: Editor selections from Latin America

The Associated Press

Photo coverage by The Associated Press in Latin America and the Caribbean last week was as varied as the region itself, from Hollywood movies filmed in Cuba to soccer, politics, and the frailty of the human condition.

In Cuba’s capital, the filming of an Ernest Hemingway movie by an international film crew helped unite a passion of both the United States and Cuba, while cliff diving was in full swing in Havana with the world’s top divers flying off El Morro Castle.

Brazil is on its final countdown toward the start of the World Cup and everyone is in the grips of soccer fever. Argentine President Cristina Fernandez joined in the selfie craze while visiting the Facebook office in Buenos Aires.

In Panama, Juan Carlos Varela was elected the new president, confounding all expectations and opinion polls. Tens of thousands of citizens marched in Chile demanding changes in the educational system, and students in Haiti clashed with police over school cancelations. Members of Mexican vigilante groups became sworn officers of the peace.

People in the remote Brazilian village of Araras talked about their community’s ordeal of having an extremely high rate of the normally rare genetic skin disease known as XP.
