MADRID (AP) — Spain’s airport authority says a computer glitch in its automated air traffic control system has caused flight delays during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.
A spokeswoman for AENA says the control system failed around 11 a.m. (0900 GMT) Saturday and affected traffic into and out of Madrid’s Barajas airport, the country’s busiest hub.
Spain’s airline pilots’ union SEPLA said on its official Twitter account “there will be major delays.”
A spokeswoman for Enaire, the government’s air traffic control authority, said a computer sub-system had failed for just over two hours but had not posed any danger to passengers flying.
The AENA and Enaire spokeswomen spoke on condition of anonymity because regulations forbid them from being cited by name in the press.
