Ex-Guantanamo inmate gets Canada prison transfer

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Alberta’s top court has granted an application by former Guantanamo Bay detainee Omar Khadr to be transferred to a provincial jail from a federal medium-security prison in the western Canadian province.

The Appeal Court has ruled the 27-year-old should be serving a youth sentence.

Khadr lost his bid for a transfer last fall, then appealed.

Khadr pleaded guilty in 2010 to five war crime offenses, including killing a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan when he was 15.

The Toronto-born Khadr was transferred to Canada from the military base in Guantanamo Bay in September 2012.

Khadr was reclassified earlier this year as a medium-security inmate and transferred to the medium-security Bowden Institution in central Alberta from the maximum-security Edmonton Institution.
