Man on slashing spree in China kills 2, injures 14

BEIJING (AP) — A knife-wielding man in a northeastern Chinese city near the North Korean border went on a slashing spree Sunday, killing two people and injuring 14 others, a state broadcaster said.

The attack at a shopping mall in the city of Yanji was carried out by a local Chinese man of Korean ethnicity, China Central Television, or CCTV, reported.

One victim died at the scene, while another died in a hospital.

Police apprehended the suspect, who was identified only by his surname, Cui, CCTV said on its official microblog site.

The broadcaster said an investigation was underway. No motive for the attack was mentioned.

Calls to Yanji police and local authorities either rang unanswered Sunday or reached officials who had no immediate comment.

Photos posted on CCTV’s microblog showed ambulances parked outside the mall and a covered body on a stretcher.
