NEW DELHI (AP) — Crews have recovered at least 17 bodies from under mud, rocks, and other debris from a massive landslide the buried a remote village in western India.
Officials believe the death toll could go much higher. The mudslide swept away scores of houses in the village, which is home to more than 700 people.
The mudslide was triggered by torrential rains. And continuing rainfall and bad roads are hampering rescue efforts.
Some 250 disaster response personnel are in the area, assisting local police and medical teams who began clearing the debris.
Landslides are common in the area during the monsoon season, which runs from June through September.
