PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A Philadelphia man who fled overseas after the killing of his wife's lover in a restaurant two decades ago is back in court to face murder charges.

Seventy-one-year-old Santiago Pedroso appears gaunt and haggard after two decades on the run, mostly in the Philippines.

Pedroso faces a murder trial after a preliminary hearing Wednesday, when a detective read his recent police statement.

Authorities say Pedroso told police that jealousy drove him to kill 41-year-old Delores Alvarez, but he didn't kill his wife because their teen daughter would be left motherless.

The FBI says Pedroso was arrested this month after seeking a passport at the U.S. embassy in Manila. He is a self-described spiritualist who sold religious items.

His lawyer says he will see if Pedroso's statement matches the evidence.
