Attack on Ivory Coast disarmament convoy kills 1

Monday - 7/1/2013, 6:11pm  ET

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) -- Ivory Coast's state broadcaster says gunmen attacked a convoy carrying the head of a national commission that is trying to convince ex-combatants to disarm. A soldier was killed and three other people were wounded.

Commission chief Fidele Sarassoro survived Monday's attack unhurt.

The attack in northern Ivory Coast came as President Alassane Ouattara prepares to visit the region, which was under rebel control from 2002 to 2010 after an attempted coup against ex-President Laurent Gbagbo.

Gbagbo's refusal to cede office after losing the November 2010 election to Ouattara sparked five months of violence that claimed at least 3,000 lives.

Analysts say a successful disarmament operation is crucial to ensuring stability in the world's largest cocoa producer.
