London subway strike looms after talks break down

Monday - 4/28/2014, 10:00am  ET

LONDON (AP) -- London commuters are facing five days of delays and disruption after talks to avert a strike on the city's subway system ended without a breakthrough.

London Underground staff are due to walk out over management plans to close all ticket offices on the subway network, known as the Tube.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union plan to strike for 48 hours starting at 9 p.m. (2000GMT) Monday, and for 72 hours from May 5.

A two-day strike in February largely shut down the Underground system, London's lifeline, which sees 3.5 million journeys a day.

The transport authority wants to shut ticket offices and move staff to platforms and other locations. It says that will mean around 750 job losses out of the Underground's staff of 18,000.
