Albania: 2.2 tons of cannabis found inside sofas

Tuesday - 4/8/2014, 2:31pm  ET

TIRANA, Albania (AP) -- Police in Albania say they have seized 2.2 metric tons (4,850 pounds) of cannabis hidden in sofas to be shipped to nearby Italy.

Police found the drugs late Monday after searching a truck at the port of Durres, 33 kilometers (20 miles) west of the capital Tirana. The Macedonian driver was arrested, according to a police statement Tuesday, which did not give further details.

The seizure occurred a day after police discovered 1.6 tons of cannabis hidden in a forest in southwestern Albania, also believed to be destined for Italy.

Albania, one of Europe's poorest countries, produces large quantities of cannabis. In the key southern growing region of Lazarat alone, annual production is estimated at 900 tons, worth about 4.5 billion euros ($6 billion) -- about half the country's GDP.
