SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - A fire at a home for the elderly and people with development disabilities in the Puerto Rican city of Bayamon has killed three people and sent others to the hospital.
The Puerto Rico Fire Department says in a statement that investigators are still investigating the cause of the pre-dawn fire at Providence Home. Bayamon Mayor Ramon Rivera tells reporters that four people who were inside the home are being treated at two local hospitals for smoke inhalation.
Two of those killed were reportedly elderly people with senile dementia; the third was a 32-year-old man with mental disabilities.
The government office that investigates cases of elder abuse said it also had inspectors on the scene but that the home's license was valid and there was no record of any complaints.
