Upstate New York slammed by snow

WASHINGTON — Think the arctic cold is bad in Washington? The cold air is
producing intense lake effect snow squalls and even thundersnow across parts
of
upstate New York. Snow amounts may approach record levels south of Buffalo and
Watertown.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo, New York, says that some areas
downwind
of lakes Erie and Ontario could see more than three feet of snow and near
blizzard conditions on Tuesday.

WTOP’s Dave Dildine was inside one of the snow squalls in Hamburg, New York,
late Monday, when the snowstorm was producing cloud-to-ground lightning.

Lake effect snow is relatively common for this snow-savvy region, but the
National Weather Service says this particular round may be a one-in-10-year
event for the city of Buffalo.
