Celebrate canine companions on National Dog Day (Photos)

WASHINGTON — Man’s best friend deserves a little recognition on Tuesday, which is National Dog Day.

National Dog Day is celebrated on Aug. 26 annually and acknowledges family dogs bring love, safety and comfort. Also, the day draws attention to the number of dogs that still need homes.

National Dog Day, founded in 2004, encourages people to donate $5 to a local dog shelter, according to its website.

The day’s founder, Colleen Paige, says she wanted to establish one day devoted to the wet-nosed canine companions around the world.

“I want the world to celebrate dogs for their capacity to love and their ability to impact our lives everyday in the most miraculous ways. I want this to be a day to encourage dog ownership of all breeds, mixed and pure – to help abolish puppy mills and end breed specific legislation so we can create a world where all dogs (and every animal) can live a happy, safe and abuse-free life,” Paige says on the website.
