Police ID woman killed by Amtrak train in Del.

CLAYMONT, Del. (AP) — Delaware State Police say they don’t know why a Newark woman was walking on the railroad tracks when she was fatally struck by an Amtrak passenger train near the Claymont station.

Police identified the woman Monday as 34-year-old Jennifer Fitzgerald. She was hit by a northbound commuter train at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday and pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the engineer stopped the train immediately after the collision.

Amtrak spokeswoman Christina Leeds tells The News Journal that that the train, number 166, originated in Washington and was headed to New York with 419 passengers.
