Activists seek to ban Texas cheerleader from Facebook

Thursday - 7/3/2014, 2:58am  ET

WASHINGTON -- Animal rights activists are outraged by a Texas cheerleader who travels to Africa, hunts large animals and posts pictures of herself smiling above their carcasses on Facebook.

As a result, the activists want 19-year-old Kendall Jones banned from Facebook, according to two Change.org petitions. One petition, launched by Kieron Brown of South Africa, had more than 36,000 supporters on Wednesday; another -- launched by Amy Bevaan of the U.K. -- has more than 5,900 supporters.

Jones, a cheerleader at Texas Tech University, says on her Facebook page that she first traveled to Zimbabwe in 2004. Four years later, she shot a white rhino; in 2009, Jones says, she killed an elephant. In her photos, Jones is seen posing next to a dead zebra, lion and elephant.

On Tuesday, the "Support Kendall" Facebook page was created in defense of Jones. As of Wednesday, that page has more than 68,000 likes.
