Unattended backpacks found at Boston Marathon finish line

WASHINGTON — Two unattended backpacks were found near the Boston Marathon finish line on Monday night, after a day of remembrance of the bombings at the same spot a year ago.

New England Cable News reports that the backpacks were found at about 8 p.m., and a man was in custody. They don’t know whether he was under arrest or being questioned.

One of the backpacks was detonated shortly before 9. The all-clear has been given.

CBS Boston reports that at least one of the bags was carried by a man identified as Kayvon Edson, who was wearing a long black veil and screaming “Boston Strong.” They say Edson told the police he had a rice cooker in his bag.

CBS News says that the rice cooker in the bag was full of confetti.

Edson has been charged with disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace and possession of a hoax device.

The other bag was destroyed at about 9:40. It contained photo equipment.
