SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Authorities say a missing runner survived for two days by sleeping on a cliff and keeping warm by curling up into bushes in a snowy wilderness area of Northern California.

Placer County sheriff's spokeswoman Dena Erwin says 55-year-old Robert Root was talking to rescuers Tuesday when they transported him from the wilderness in an all-terrain vehicle.

He was found in the Sierra Nevada about 200 miles from San Francisco.

Root was wearing only a light running shirt, shorts and running shoes when rescuers found him walking along a bridge.

Erwin says Root, who is recuperating in a hospital, told authorities that he survived on water, energy supplements and shaking his limbs to keep warm. He requested a hamburger after his rescue.

Root was last seen on Sunday when he became separated from a group of runners training along the Western States Trail.
