RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A civil liberties group has filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of an ex-Marine, claiming his rights were violated when he was detained in a psychiatric facility after posting anti-government messages on Facebook.

The Rutherford Institute's attorneys filed suit Wednesday against law enforcement and mental health officials over the weeklong detention last August of Brandon J. Raub, who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

They claim the veteran was detained under "Operation Vigilant Eagle," a federal program involving surveillance of veterans who express views critical of the government.

Raub was detained Aug. 16 after being questioned about Facebook posts, including some that spoke of a pending revolution. A judge ordered him released Aug. 23. He has not been charged with any crime.

Federal and local officials declined comment on the lawsuit.
