CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands - The U.S. Coast Guard and the crew of a Chinese-flagged container ship have helped rescue four people aboard a sailboat that became disabled near the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Spokesman Ricardo Castrodad says a U.S. citizen, two French citizens and a person with dual citizenship were aboard the boat. He says the boat had departed the U.S. state of Virginia and was headed to the Dutch Caribbean nation of St. Maarten.

He said the boat became disabled Tuesday in 10-foot (3-meter) seas more than 215 miles (346 kilometers) north of St. Thomas.

Castrodad said the Coast Guard received help from a crew aboard the container ship called "Lingue" that diverted its course to help the disabled vessel.

He said the sailboat was pulled safely into St. Thomas late Friday.
