GRANTSVILLE, Md. (AP) - Maryland State police have arrested an inmate they say left a highway work crew, stabbed a correctional officer and carjacked a motorist on an interstate.
Troopers say an inmate work crew was working in Grantsville on Monday when one of the inmates got into a van and stabbed a correctional officer with pliers. Police say the inmate tried to drive off in the van, but couldn't.
Authorities say the inmate then flagged down a motorist on Interstate 68. They say he stabbed the driver, pulled him from the vehicle and drove off. The inmate, 38-year-old Larry J. Johnson, hit a tree after a 12-mile pursuit and was arrested, according to authorities.
The correctional officer and driver were treated at a hospital.
