Grief counselors on hand after Woodbridge student’s death

WASHINGTON — Grief counselors will be on hand at a Prince William County
high school Wednesday morning after one of its students was shot and killed
near the school earlier this week.

Brenden Wilson, 16, a student at Woodbridge Senior High School, was shot and
killed Monday afternoon near the school in broad daylight. Police arrested
20-year-old Kawain Tyrell Smalls
Tuesday night and charged him with murder
and weapons charges.

The police say the shooting was drug-related and that Wilson and Smalls knew
each other. According to police, Wilson was gunned down on a paved path that
students use as a shortcut.

In a note sent to students Tuesday, Principal David Huckestein said there was
no threat to others students or the school.

“[Wilson] will be missed by his friends here at school,” Huckestein said in
the note.

A Crisis Response Team will be at the school Wednesday morning to help
students and staff members deal with Wilson’s death.

“This is an extremely difficult situation for both students and staff. I
appreciate your understanding and assistance as we work to absorb the loss as
a school community,” Huckestein wrote.
