Va. 29 road project could face delays

WASHINGTON — One of Virginia’s largest construction projects is being delayed, but it’s unclear for how long.

Corey Stewart, chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, says the Virginia Department of Transportation won’t officially say that it is delaying construction of the Va. 29/Linton Hall Road interchange for the summer because of upcoming concerts at Jiffy Lube Live a mile up the road.

“We do know that they are very concerned about Jiffy Lube Live and the concerts, especially the Jimmy Buffett concert. … We understand why they’ve delayed this a little bit,” Stewart says.

Last summer, VDOT delayed the opening of a new bridge at the interchange because of a sold-out Jimmy Buffett concert that attracted 25,000 concertgoers.

This year, the combination of concert traffic and construction would lead to major delays and backups for area residents. This interchange project is expected to cost about $216 million and be finished by June 2015.
