Heavy rains blamed for landfill stench

DUMFRIES, Va. - The stink -- the smell of rotten eggs -- at Potomac Landfill riled up residents who complained to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, which in turn cited the privately-run facility in Dumfries.

Residents can blame September's rains for the eggy stench. The smell comes from decomposing drywall or sheetrock.

The state says the wastewater system malfunctioned, exposing the waste. DEQ cited the facility for four violations.

Landfill officials challenge the alleged violations and say the issues have been resolved, Inside NOVA reports.

Burwin Reed, director of operations for Potomac Landfill, says what happened with the weather -- the 24 inches of rain that fell -- was not "a normal situation."
