Pr. William volunteers take fresh approach to feeding needy

WASHINGTON - Volunteers in one local county are taking a fresh approach to feeding the area's needy.

Every Sunday when the Dale City Farmers Market closes, about 40 volunteers from the Master Gardeners of Prince William County get to work collecting leftover fruits and vegetables from vendors.

"Last year Master Gardeners collected about 90,000 pounds of fresh produce," says the Virginia Cooperative Extension's Nancy Berlin, who organizes the volunteers.

The leftover haul is taken to a local homeless shelter and food bank.

Berlin says the amount of produce collected this year is likely to double. The group this year also is partnering with the local Lions Club in the effort.

"Even for the volunteers, it's such a feel-good project," Berlin says.
