Deadly Loudoun accident sends deer through windshield

WATERFORD, Va. – An Arlington, Va. man is dead after an accident with a deer in Loudoun County Saturday night.

The accident happened at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s office says. The driver of a Toyota Prius hit a deer trying to cross the southbound lane of Route 9 near Waterford, Va.

The impact sent the deer flying through the windshield of an oncoming Nissan Xterra traveling northbound on Route 9. The accident killed the front passenger in the Nissan, 26-year-old Rodolfo Diamantio Ruiz Villatoro of Arlington.

Paramedics took the driver of the Nissan, 40-year-old Juan Salgado, and another passenger in the car to the Cornwall Campus of Inova Loudoun Hospital with serious injuries. The passenger in the Toyota was injured in the accident but declined treatment.

Route 9 was shut down for an hour and traffic was diverted as the sheriff’s Crash Reconstruction Unit collected evidence for the crash investigation.
