WASHINGTON -- An large explosion at an apartment complex in Sterling put 21 people out of their homes on Thursday, according to Loudoun County Fire and Rescue.
Emergency crews responded to a call on Ingomar Terrace around 8:20 a.m. to find smoke coming out of a four story complex on the 46000 block. Upon further inspection, crews found significant damage to a back wall where the explosion occurred.
Firefighters put out what remained of the fire, which had been knocked down mostly by the building's interior sprinkler system.
The residents were all evacuated safely and the Red Cross is providing temporary accommodations.
Investigators say the explosion was accidental and damages are estimated at around $300,000.
