ASHBURN, Va. -- A veteran fourth-grade teacher in Loudoun County is under arrest, for allegedly being drunk at school.

Laura Ann Collins, 43, of Leesburg is charged with being drunk in public.

The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office says a member of the School Resource Officer Unit responded to Creighton's Corner Elementary School Wednesday afternoon, after a school employee reported a teacher was believed to be under the influence of alcohol.

Collins was being held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.

Loudoun County Public Schools spokesman Wayde Bayard said Collins' employment status has not yet been determined, since she was charged late Wednesday. He expected an update Thursday.

According to her biography on the school's web page, Collins has been a teacher for 20 years, at various schools throughout Loudoun County.

Attempts to contact Collins through her work email were unsuccessful.
