Vandals tag Loudoun County cars with mysterious '68'

Wednesday - 6/1/2011, 12:26pm  ET

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. -- A mysterious crime spree has county officials scrambling for answers.

Since the end of April, more than 30 cars have been spray painted with the number 68 in black. Investigators are still trying to figure out what the number means.

In some cases, the tires also were slashed and the windows smashed.

The Sheriff's Department believes young people are behind the vandalism, which appears to be "juvenile in nature."

"There is no indication that it's gang related," says Kraig Troxell, a spokesman for the county sheriff's office.

Officials are downplaying the significance of the number 68 because they feel publicity may be emboldening the vandals.

Most of the defacing occurred on weekends, Troxell says.

Anyone with information should contact the Loudoun County Sheriff's Department at 703-777-1021.
