Work on I-95 Express Lanes shift traffic pattern

SPRINGFIELD — As work continues on the I-95 Express Lanes Project, the Virginia Department of Transportation says that a temporary traffic pattern will be put into place on the Franconia-Springfield Parkway.

Construction crews will block all left turn lanes at the ramps to and from the I-95 Express Lanes at the Franconia-Springfield Parkway. Only right lanes will be permitted at the exchange while the work is performed. The ramps will be widened, storm drains will be improved, and new gates will be installed. VDOT expects to have the left turn lanes open by Labor Day weekend.

For the next four weeks, drivers who normally make a left turn at this junction will need to detour around this work by using either Frontier Drive to the east of I-95 or Backlick Road to the west. Traffic at each of these exits is controlled by traffic signals. Fairfax County Police will be on-hand during the first few weekday commutes to ensure that the detoured traffic does not back up. Drivers who travel the parkway near I-95 could also experience a delay.

The I-95 Express Lanes Project is expected to be near completion by the end of the year.
