Black bears wander into Vienna backyard

WASHINGTON – A Vienna, Va. resident says he saw two black bears in his yard Saturday morning. The small bear and the larger bear appeared to be limping.

Black bears are not common in the Fairfax County area. In June 2013, a black bear was spotted in a McLean back yard, Patch reports.

According to Fairfax County wildlife officials, “Black bears generally pose little threat to humans, their property or pets. Black bears are naturally shy animals and not known for aggressive behavior.”

Black bears generally hibernate from early November through April, and young bears become independent in the spring. They generally weigh anywhere from 100 to 400 pounds. They are generally dark brown or black with a light brown or tan muzzle.

If you see the injured black bear or believe a black bear may pose a danger, call Fairfax County Animal Control at 703-691-2131.
