WASHINGTON – What better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day than with a new friend?

At least, that’s how the Fairfax County Animal Shelter sees it. Adoption fees are cut in half March 13-15 for dogs and cats older than 5 years.

Ten of the pets will have their adoption fees completely waived in honor of the holiday.

According to the shelter, there are more than 25 dogs and puppies, 30 cats and kittens and 15 small pets ready for some luck of the Irish.

“For whatever reason, there are more families than ever making the tough decision to give up their beloved pets,” said Director Tawny Hammond in a news release.

“Many of the animals we have now are wonderful, house-trained pets who have lived with kids and other pets. Through no fault of their own, they’ve found themselves homeless.”

The shelter encourages anyone, even if they aren’t looking to adopt, to visit the shelter. This weekend there will be green treats for human visitors and special treats to take home to pets.
