2 dead in Merrifield crash

WASHINGTON – A driver and a passenger are dead after a crash that Fairfax County police believe involved alcohol and speeding in Merrifield, Va.

An officer tried to stop a suspected drunk driver on Hilltop Road just before 2 a.m. Monday.

Police say the driver of the 1999 Dodge Neon lost control near the intersection with Old Lee Highway, ran off the road and struck a tree.

The man driving and a man who was a passenger died at the scene. Police say a second man was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police have not released the names of the victims because their families have not been located.
